MTV Releases Full Liquid Television Catalog to The Web
Impossible as it may seem, there was a time that MTV created uniquely creative programming that set the standard for artistic expression. I would say that many of our friends drew several inspirations from videos they’d seem in MTV past, but sadly you’d be hard pressed to find any ingenuity left in MTV that wasn’t calculated by dollars and cents. Show’s like Joe’s Apartment, The Ben Stiller Show, The Maxx, and actual videos ruled the airwaves. I recall being glued to the TV for new episodes of AEON Flux, and I always said that “The Real World” was a bad idea, and still credit it as the downfall of television as the first real reality television show.

When Peter Chung’s Æon Flux debuted in 1991, a few things happened. First off, viewers who missed the chance to lust over Wilma Flintstone, Daphne and the Baroness suddenly had a new animated object of desire. Secondly, sci-fi fans who tuned in were thrown into a dystopian world where nothing really made much sense but was awesome anyway.
The toughest puppet to ride a motorcycle since Miss Piggy in The Great Muppet Caper — goes on a search for her long-lost boyfriend. Predictably, mayhem ensues. In the end, the lovers are reunited (sorta) and the fate of the Lita Ford-esque Winter remains appropriately ambiguous.
